History
The name Mecenate has in time become a synonym of "talent scout" and patron of the artists. The hotel was named after him because it was right here on the Esquiline Hill that Mecenate lived, surrounded by his poet, writer, mime, actor and musician friends.
Mecenate was as well as Augustus' most intimate and authoritative political adviser. At times he substituted the Emperor himself, although he always refused to accept any official type of assignement or title. But Mecenate was primarily an axceptional promoter of culture.
Poets such as Virgil, Horacious, and Properitius were a part of his circle. Mecenate was a patron, a generous benefactor and an inspiration to all. Without him, Latin literature and our culture in general would have been a lot poorer.
