They are placed in Vatican Street in Rome, inside the Vatican City, and represent one of the richest art collection in the world because they expose the huge collection of works of art accumulated by Popes during the centuries. This Museum was founded by Pope Julius II in XVI century. The Sistine Chapel and the Papal Rooms frescoed by Raphael belong to those works that visitors can admire during their visit. The Vatican Museums origin might coincide with a marble sculpture purchased 500 years ago.
This sculpture (representing Laocoon, the priest who tried to convince Trojans to reject the Trojan horse that Greeks gave them), was founded in 14th January 1506 into a vineyard close to Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome. Pope Julius II sent Giuliano from Sangallo and Michelangelo Buonarroti to examine this discover. They suggest to the Pope to purchase the sculpture from the vineyard owner and after a month it was exposed into the Museums.Vatican Museums, rightly called in the plural, represent a complex of museums and collections.
Actually they include the Museums (the Vatican Picture-gallery, the Modern Religious Art collection, the Missionary-Ethnological Museum, the Egyptian Gregorian Museum, the Etruscan Gregorian Museum, the Pio Christian Museum, the Profane Gregorian Museum, the Carriage Pavilion, the Philatelic and Numismatic Museum, the Apostolic Vatican Library Museum, the Chiaramonti Museum) and the explorable rooms of Vatican Palaces (the galleries: the Lapidary Gallery, the Braccio Nuovo Gallery, the Candelabrum Gallery, the Tapestry Gallery, the Gallery of Maps); the Chapels: Sistine Chapel Niccolina Chapel, Urban VIII Chapel; the rooms: the Biga Room, the Pio V room, the Sobieski room, the Virgin room, the Raphael rooms, the Raphael Loggia, the Chiaroscuri room and the Borgia room).
